Energy Audit is basically a preliminary inspection, survey and analysis of energy flow for energy conservation in a building, process or system to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively affecting the output. It consists of activities that seek to identify conservation opportunities preliminary to the development of an energy savings program. As a result of growing understanding of human impact upon global warming and climate change, the interest in energy audits has increased immensely.

Use of Thermography in Energy Audit

The advent of high resolution thermograph has helped energy auditors to detect thermal defects and air leakage in building envelopes by taking a thermal image of the various surfaces of a building. Infrared scanning allows energy auditors to check the effectiveness of insulation in a building's construction. The resulting thermograms help auditors determine whether a building needs insulation and where in the building it should go. For purposes of an energy audit, the thermographer will analyze the patterns within the surface temperatures to identify heat transfer through convection, radiation, or conduction. It is important to note that the thermography only identifies surface temperatures, and analysis must be applied to determine the reasons for the patterns within the surface temperatures. Thermography also serves as a quality control tool, to ensure that insulation has been installed correctly.
